Casa Verde is an educational game for kids, created to teach energy management in a playful and engaging way. Inspired by Diane Ackerman's idea that "play is our brain's favourite way of learning", Casa Verde aligns with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. Designed for 2-4 players, the game uses wooden tokens representing household appliances. Players guess which appliances use less energy, earning points for correct answers and learning to avoid excessive energy consumption. Casa Verde's goal is to develop an early awareness of sustainability and responsible energy use in the home.
The whole project has the goal to familiarize kids with Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. The mean used to do so is kids' favorite activity: play.
Real interviews have been conducted with 7 years old kids within an Italian elementary school. The kids highlighted their ideas about a sustainable world and shared their drawings with us.
Kids' vision of sustainability.
Each token represents an electronic device present in kids' daily life.
Game tokens are crafted from turned wood, with graphics applied using pad printing.
Each token's underside shows lightning bolts for annual energy use and a colored dot for energy class.
During the game, players will challenge each other to guess the energy consumption of home appliances, eventually gathering them in their "home" and being responsible for their own consumption.
This project provided an opportunity to prototype and playtest with kids.
